Who this is for in Malaysia
Malaysian Indians, largely Tamil in heritage, are one of the country’s three main communities, and Indian expatriate professionals have added to them in the Klang Valley. For many families medicine abroad, including in India, has long been part of the conversation after SPM.

The decision
Which route to take after SPM — and whether a degree in Malaysia, India or elsewhere fits the student.
- “Is STPM or matriculation the better route for her, or should she do a foundation year?”
- “Relatives keep suggesting medicine in India. How do we know he would suit it?”
- “She scored well in SPM but has no idea which field to pick for university.”
School systems, and where the assessment fits
- SPM and STPM
- The profile and career matches help decide between science, commerce and arts routes at pre-university, which is the Malaysian equivalent of the stream choice.
- CBSE and international schools
- Expatriate students at CBSE schools in Kuala Lumpur can read the stream ranking as written.
From Malaysia to a college in India
- NEET-UG has had an exam centre in Kuala Lumpur, used by students applying to medical colleges in India.
- Foreign nationals, including Malaysian citizens, can apply to NITs and centrally funded institutes through DASA with a JEE Main score.
- The Indian government’s Study in India programme and ICCR scholarships list places open to foreign students.
Staying in Malaysia, or going elsewhere
- Public universities admit Malaysian students through the central UPU application after STPM, matriculation or equivalent.
- Private universities include branch campuses such as Manipal University College Malaysia, which teaches medicine.

What the report covers from here
