How the quiz works
Each activity belongs to one of six areas of work that career research has used for decades, from hands-on making and fixing to organising records. Three activities stand for each area. Your answers give every area a score out of six, and the three highest, in order, form your interest code.
Every career in the database has a code on the same six areas, set from what the work actually involves. The quiz weights a career’s first letter most and its third least, multiplies each by your score for that area, and lists the careers that come out highest. A career can appear even if it is not one you had considered, which is often the most useful part.
If your scores come out nearly even, the quiz says so and shows no list. An even spread is a genuine result, not an error, and a list built on it would be a guess.
What a quiz can and cannot tell you
A quick quiz is a good first step: it widens the field and gives you names to read about. It is a poor last step. Interests change in the teenage years, and enjoying an activity is not the same as being suited to a career built on it. Two careers with the same code can differ completely in the years of study, the cost and the daily work.
The free assessment takes about 45 minutes because it measures what this quiz leaves out: reasoning, through timed questions; working style; and what you want a job to give you. It then ranks every career against all four, with the reason for each placing.
Common questions
- Is this a career aptitude quiz?
- No, and it is worth knowing the difference. This quiz asks what you would enjoy, which is interest. Aptitude is what you can do, and it can only be measured with timed questions that have right answers. The free assessment includes those; a two-minute quiz cannot.
- How accurate is a career quiz?
- As accurate as eighteen questions can be, which is a useful start and no more. It is good at showing which kinds of work you lean towards. It cannot tell two careers in the same area apart, and it knows nothing about your reasoning, your working style or what you need a job to pay.
- What does my interest code mean?
- The three letters are your strongest areas of the six that career research uses: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising and Conventional. Every career in our database carries a code on the same scale, which is how the matching works. The career interest test page explains the six areas in detail. Read about the six areas.
- Are my answers saved anywhere?
- No. The quiz runs in your browser, nothing is sent to us, and closing the tab clears it. There is no account and no email to give.
