Exposure to automation

Medium. Parts of this role are already being automated, and the work is shifting toward the pieces that are not. Expect the job to change rather than disappear.

What does a Company Secretary do?

What this actually looks like

A day as a Company Secretary

Written about this role. The references behind it cover finance & commerce as a field rather than company secretary specifically.

What you would actually be doing

  • Preparing a board meeting — agenda, papers, notice periods that are fixed by law
  • Writing minutes that will be read years later by somebody looking for fault
  • Filing returns with the Registrar of Companies before dates that do not move
  • Telling a director that what they want to do needs a resolution first
  • Maintaining the statutory registers that prove the company did things properly

Who you work with

  • Directors and the board, at close quarters and in confidence
  • Auditors, and the lawyers brought in for the difficult questions
  • The Registrar of Companies, SEBI and the stock exchanges
  • Finance and legal teams inside the company

What you work with

  • The Companies Act, and the SEBI regulations if the company is listed
  • MCA and ROC filing portals
  • Board and compliance management software
  • Statutory registers and minute books, which are legal records

Where and when: A corporate office, and one of the more predictable finance roles for hours — until a board meeting, a general meeting or a transaction, when it is not. Listed companies bring a heavier calendar than private ones. Practising secretaries serve several clients at once.

Reality check

Before you choose company secretary

A report that only lists what is appealing about a career is an advertisement. This is the other half. Written about this role. The references behind it cover finance & commerce as a field rather than company secretary specifically.

What people like about it

  • You sit in the room where the company's decisions are actually made
  • The qualification costs a fraction of a management degree and pays reasonably
  • Every company above a size threshold needs one, so the demand is structural
  • Independent practice is realistic, serving several small companies at once

What is genuinely hard

  • The examinations have low pass rates and most people take more than one attempt
  • You are the person who says no to directors, which is uncomfortable by design
  • Personal liability attaches to some filings — your signature carries consequences
  • Routine filing is being automated, and the role is shifting toward governance advice
Who tends to enjoy this work
Are exact about procedure, comfortable holding a position against seniority, and able to keep a confidence absolutely.
What the education journey is really like
A professional qualification rather than a degree: CSEET, then the Executive and Professional stages, with practical training in between, and membership of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India at the end. Most people read for a B.Com or a law degree alongside, which is sensible — it is what you fall back on, and a CS with an LL.B. is a markedly stronger combination in governance work.

Other legitimate ways in

The first route does not always work, and it is not always the best one. These are real alternatives, not consolation prizes.

CS with a law degree

  1. CSEET and the CS stages
  2. LL.B. taken alongside or afterwards
  3. Governance, secretarial or corporate legal roles

The strongest combination in this field. Much of the work sits on the boundary between company law and corporate practice, and the degree removes the ceiling.

Into practice

  1. CS membership and a few years in employment
  2. Certificate of practice
  3. Practising company secretary, serving several small companies

Small and mid-sized companies need the work done and cannot justify a full-time appointment. The practice is built client by client and is genuinely portable.

Sideways into compliance

  1. CS qualification
  2. A compliance or governance role in a bank, fund or listed company
  3. Compliance officer, or company secretary of a larger group

Regulated industries pay more for the same discipline, and demand for compliance people has grown faster than the supply.

Who may not enjoy being a Company Secretary?

Nothing here is a judgement about you — it is what the job is like, listed so you can decide whether it is what you want.

The four hardest things about the work itself are listed above, under what is genuinely hard. If those and the points here describe things you would rather not sign up for, that is a real answer and worth having before a stream or a degree is chosen around it.

What skills does a Company Secretary need?

What the job actually asks for, split four ways. The assessment tells you which of these your own scores already speak to.

Technical skills

  • The Companies Act, applied rather than recalled
  • Board procedure — notices, quorum, resolutions, minutes
  • Securities regulation, if the company is listed
  • Reading a financial statement well enough to spot what needs disclosing

People skills

  • Telling a director the answer is no, with the section number
  • Writing minutes that are accurate and survive scrutiny
  • Keeping board confidences without exception
  • Staying exact when everyone else is in a hurry

Digital and AI skills

  • MCA and ROC filing portals
  • Board and compliance management platforms
  • Statutory register and record systems

Industry knowledge

  • Which filings your company's size and status actually require
  • How listing obligations change the calendar
  • Where governance duties and the board's wishes pull apart

If Company Secretary appeals, also look at

Exams worth knowing about

Where an exam has its own page, it lists every other career it opens — useful if this one turns out not to fit.

Who tends to be happy here

People who rate these highly tend to stay in this work. If none of them sound like you, that is worth taking seriously.

Are you sure Company Secretary is the career you want?

Everything above describes the job. None of it tells you whether it fits you. So it is worth asking plainly, before a stream or a degree gets chosen around it.

  • Not sure? Then this is exactly the question the assessment exists to answer. It compares you against Company Secretary and 196 other careers, and shows the arithmetic behind every score, so you can see why rather than being handed a verdict.
  • Quite sure? Then double-check anyway. Being certain is not the same as having checked, and the cost of finding out late is counted in years rather than in the 45 minutes this takes. If it confirms what you already think, you carry on with a reason instead of a hope — plus the education route, the entrance exams and a ninety-day plan.

And if it does not line up, nothing closes. Company Secretary stays on your list with the gap named and a route attached, next to the careers your profile already reaches — so the answer is something to act on either way.
