Indicative. These bands are an editorial estimate assembled from public reporting, and have not yet been reconciled against a named dataset. Treat them as a shape, not a promise — the same title pays very differently across a service company, a product company and a start-up.

Outlook

Hiring demand

Stable — steady, predictable hiring.

Exposure to automation

High. A substantial part of what this role does today can already be done by software. It is not a reason to rule it out, but it is a reason to aim at the judgement-heavy end of it.

What does a Internal Auditor do?

What this actually looks like

A day as a Internal Auditor

Written about this role. The references behind it cover finance & commerce as a field rather than internal auditor specifically.

What you would actually be doing

  • Planning an audit around where the real risk sits, not where the paperwork is easiest
  • Walking through a process with the people who run it, to see what actually happens
  • Testing samples of transactions and controls against what the policy says
  • Writing findings that are specific, evidenced and hard to argue with
  • Following up on whether last year's findings were actually fixed

Who you work with

  • Process owners and department heads, who did not invite you
  • The audit committee and senior management, who receive the report
  • Statutory auditors, on overlapping scope
  • Risk and compliance functions

What you work with

  • Risk assessment and audit planning frameworks
  • Sampling methods and data analytics over full populations
  • Working papers and evidence files
  • Audit management software

Where and when: In-house internal audit departments, chartered accountancy firms and consultancies, with travel to units, plants and branches. Audit cycles are planned annually and reported quarterly. The role is deliberately independent of the functions it examines.

Reality check

Before you choose internal auditor

A report that only lists what is appealing about a career is an advertisement. This is the other half. Written about this role. The references behind it cover finance & commerce as a field rather than internal auditor specifically.

What people like about it

  • You see how the whole organisation actually works, not the version on the org chart
  • Findings reach the audit committee, so the work has real weight
  • Independence is structurally protected, which is rare and valuable
  • Audit is a recognised route into risk, compliance and finance leadership

What is genuinely hard

  • You are structurally unwelcome in every department you visit
  • Findings are negotiated, and management pushes back hard on wording
  • Travel to units and plants is substantial in multi-site organisations
  • Repeat findings are demoralising and you raise them anyway
Who tends to enjoy this work
Are comfortable being the person asking uncomfortable questions, rigorous about evidence, and able to write a finding that survives being challenged.
What the education journey is really like
A CA, CMA or B.Com with a CIA qualification; the CIA is the internationally recognised internal audit credential. Articleship or a firm's audit practice is the usual training. Data analytics skills are changing the discipline, because testing a full population beats sampling and increasingly employers expect it.

Other legitimate ways in

The first route does not always work, and it is not always the best one. These are real alternatives, not consolation prizes.

Firm audit into in-house internal audit

  1. CA, CMA or B.Com with audit articleship
  2. Audit practice at a firm, across clients
  3. In-house internal audit, then audit head

Firm years give breadth across industries; in-house work gives depth and better hours.

Audit into risk and compliance

  1. Internal audit experience, with CIA certification
  2. Risk management or compliance role
  3. Chief risk or compliance officer

A common and well-paid move, and audit is the best preparation for it.

Who may not enjoy being a Internal Auditor?

Nothing here is a judgement about you — it is what the job is like, listed so you can decide whether it is what you want.

The four hardest things about the work itself are listed above, under what is genuinely hard. If those and the points here describe things you would rather not sign up for, that is a real answer and worth having before a stream or a degree is chosen around it.

What skills does a Internal Auditor need?

What the job actually asks for, split four ways. The assessment tells you which of these your own scores already speak to.

Technical skills

  • Risk-based audit planning
  • Control testing and sampling method
  • Process walkthrough and gap identification
  • Findings writing and evidence documentation

People skills

  • Asking uncomfortable questions politely
  • Holding a finding when management pushes back
  • Staying independent of the people you work alongside

Digital and AI skills

  • Data analytics over full transaction populations
  • Audit management and working paper systems
  • ERP systems, well enough to test controls inside them

Industry knowledge

  • What the CIA qualification covers and why employers value it
  • How internal and statutory audit scopes differ
  • How analytics is replacing sampling in audit practice

If Internal Auditor appeals, also look at

Exams worth knowing about

Where an exam has its own page, it lists every other career it opens — useful if this one turns out not to fit.

Where this qualification also leads

The degrees on this route open other doors too. Worth knowing before you commit to one destination.

Who tends to be happy here

People who rate these highly tend to stay in this work. If none of them sound like you, that is worth taking seriously.

Are you sure Internal Auditor is the career you want?

Everything above describes the job. None of it tells you whether it fits you. So it is worth asking plainly, before a stream or a degree gets chosen around it.

  • Not sure? Then this is exactly the question the assessment exists to answer. It compares you against Internal Auditor and 196 other careers, and shows the arithmetic behind every score, so you can see why rather than being handed a verdict.
  • Quite sure? Then double-check anyway. Being certain is not the same as having checked, and the cost of finding out late is counted in years rather than in the 45 minutes this takes. If it confirms what you already think, you carry on with a reason instead of a hope — plus the education route, the entrance exams and a ninety-day plan.

And if it does not line up, nothing closes. Internal Auditor stays on your list with the gap named and a route attached, next to the careers your profile already reaches — so the answer is something to act on either way.
