Mid career
₹5 lakh – ₹14 lakh

Indicative. These bands are an editorial estimate assembled from public reporting, and have not yet been reconciled against a named dataset. Treat them as a shape, not a promise — the same title pays very differently across a service company, a product company and a start-up.
Outlook
Hiring demand
Stable — steady, predictable hiring.
Exposure to automation
High. A substantial part of what this role does today can already be done by software. It is not a reason to rule it out, but it is a reason to aim at the judgement-heavy end of it.
What does a Accountant do?
What this actually looks like
A day as a Accountant
Written about this role. The references behind it cover finance & commerce as a field rather than accountant specifically.
What you would actually be doing
- Recording and classifying transactions so the books actually reflect the business
- Reconciling bank, vendor and customer ledgers and chasing what does not tie
- Closing the month — accruals, provisions, depreciation, and the review that follows
- Preparing GST and TDS returns against statutory due dates
- Producing the schedules the auditor will ask for, before they ask
Who you work with
- Business owners or finance managers who want the numbers sooner
- Vendors and customers, over invoices and payments
- Statutory auditors and tax consultants
- Banks, on reconciliation and facilities
What you work with
- Tally, Zoho Books or SAP, depending on the size of the business
- Spreadsheets, for everything the system will not do
- The GST and income tax portals, and their filing calendars
- A reconciliation habit, which is the whole job
Where and when: In-house finance teams, chartered accountancy firms and outsourced accounting providers. Desk work with hard external deadlines — GST monthly, TDS quarterly, audit annually. Year end and statutory due dates are the pressure points and they do not move.
Working conditions
- Typical hours
- 9 hours, peaks at year end
- Remote possible
- Yes, at least partly
- Travel
- low travel
- Physical demand
- low physical demand
Reality check
Before you choose accountant
A report that only lists what is appealing about a career is an advertisement. This is the other half. Written about this role. The references behind it cover finance & commerce as a field rather than accountant specifically.
What people like about it
- The books either balance or they do not, which is an unusually clear standard
- Every business needs this, so employment is available everywhere
- Practice of your own is realistic and can be built from a few clients
- The knowledge compounds and transfers across industries completely
What is genuinely hard
- Statutory deadlines are immovable and they arrive every month
- The work is repetitive by design and the cycle repeats
- Pay without a CA or CMA qualification plateaus relatively early
- Year end and audit season mean long hours with no flexibility
- Who tends to enjoy this work
- Are exact with numbers and records, comfortable with a monthly cycle that repeats, and satisfied by things reconciling rather than by novelty.
- What the education journey is really like
- A B.Com is the standard entry, and it is enough for accounting roles. The CA, CMA or ACCA qualification is what changes the pay ceiling, and many accountants study for it while working. Practical experience with GST, TDS and closing is what employers test, and it is learned in a firm or a finance team rather than in a classroom.
Other legitimate ways in
The first route does not always work, and it is not always the best one. These are real alternatives, not consolation prizes.
B.Com into a finance team or firm
- B.Com, with practical GST and Tally exposure
- Accounts executive in a firm or an in-house finance team
- Accounts manager, or a professional qualification alongside
Open and employable immediately. The qualification taken alongside is what lifts the ceiling.
Professional qualification route
- B.Com with CA, CMA or ACCA articleship and study
- Qualified accountant in industry or practice
- Finance controller, or your own practice
Harder and much better paid, and articleship is where the real training happens.
Who may not enjoy being a Accountant?
Nothing here is a judgement about you — it is what the job is like, listed so you can decide whether it is what you want.
- The hours look like this: 9 hours, peaks at year end.
- More of this work is exposed to automation than most, so the parts of it that are valuable will move during your career.
- Entry pay starts low — from about ₹1.8 lakh a year — and rises with what you can show rather than on the day you qualify.
The four hardest things about the work itself are listed above, under what is genuinely hard. If those and the points here describe things you would rather not sign up for, that is a real answer and worth having before a stream or a degree is chosen around it.
What skills does a Accountant need?
What the job actually asks for, split four ways. The assessment tells you which of these your own scores already speak to.
Technical skills
- Double entry, classification and ledger accuracy
- Reconciliation of bank, vendor and customer accounts
- Month and year end closing
- GST and TDS compliance and return filing
People skills
- Refusing to post something you cannot substantiate
- Chasing a vendor or a colleague for a document, repeatedly
- Holding accuracy through a closing deadline
Digital and AI skills
- Tally, Zoho Books or SAP
- Spreadsheet modelling and reconciliation
- GST and income tax filing portals
Industry knowledge
- What the statutory calendar requires and when
- How CA, CMA and ACCA change the pay ceiling
- How in-house, firm and outsourced accounting work differ
If Accountant appeals, also look at
Chosen by how far the interest pattern and the weighted activities of each one overlap with this. The reason is printed so you can disagree with it.

Exams worth knowing about
Where an exam has its own page, it lists every other career it opens — useful if this one turns out not to fit.

Are you sure Accountant is the career you want?
Everything above describes the job. None of it tells you whether it fits you. So it is worth asking plainly, before a stream or a degree gets chosen around it.

- Not sure? Then this is exactly the question the assessment exists to answer. It compares you against Accountant and 196 other careers, and shows the arithmetic behind every score, so you can see why rather than being handed a verdict.
- Quite sure? Then double-check anyway. Being certain is not the same as having checked, and the cost of finding out late is counted in years rather than in the 45 minutes this takes. If it confirms what you already think, you carry on with a reason instead of a hope — plus the education route, the entrance exams and a ninety-day plan.
And if it does not line up, nothing closes. Accountant stays on your list with the gap named and a route attached, next to the careers your profile already reaches — so the answer is something to act on either way.
