Who this is for in Mauritius
About two in three Mauritians trace their family to India, mostly to Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat, and ties to India in language, religion and education have stayed strong. This page is for Mauritian students and parents, and for Indian professionals posted to the island with school-age children.

The decision
Which subjects to keep after Grade 9, which three to take at HSC, and whether to study on the island or overseas.
- “She is aiming for a laureate scholarship. Should her HSC subjects follow the scholarship or her interests?”
- “He chose the science side because his friends did. Is economics a better fit?”
- “Would medicine in India cost less than in France or the UK, and is it recognised when she comes home?”
School systems, and where the assessment fits
- After the National Certificate of Education
- At the end of Grade 9 students choose the subjects they will sit for the Cambridge School Certificate. The stream ranking in the Class 8–10 report shows whether the science, economics or arts side fits, and what each one rules out later.
- Choosing HSC subjects
- Lower Six students picking three principal subjects and two subsidiaries should take the Class 11–12 assessment. Its career matches name the degree each career needs, which is how to test a subject combination.
Studying in Mauritius, or elsewhere
- The University of Mauritius, the University of Technology, Mauritius and the Open University of Mauritius admit on HSC results, with subject requirements for each programme.
- State of Mauritius scholarships, known as laureate scholarships, fund the top HSC candidates on each side to study abroad.
- France, the UK, Australia, Malaysia and India are the most common destinations for students who leave.
If India is one of your options
- India offers ICCR scholarships to Mauritian students every year through the High Commission of India in Port Louis, and many Mauritian doctors, engineers and teachers trained in India.
- Indian universities accept the Cambridge HSC for admission; the Study in India portal shows which courses take foreign applicants and at what fee.
- Medicine in India requires NEET-UG. Mauritius has no exam centre on the recent overseas list, so candidates travel to sit it.
What you get, wherever you study
You do not need to be planning on an Indian college to use this. The assessment looks at you, not at a syllabus or a country: what interests you, how you work, how you reason, and which careers and fields of study fit that. It is open to students of any nationality, and they use it to choose subjects and a direction for study in Mauritius or anywhere else.
Everything the report says about the student carries over to Mauritius unchanged: the interest code, the personality and reasoning profile, the careers that fit. The colleges, entrance exams, fees and salaries attached to those careers are Indian, so treat them as a picture of the India option and not of the University of Mauritius.
Prices when paying from Mauritius
The amount is in Indian rupees, not Mauritian rupees — the two are different currencies, and your bank shows the converted figure before you confirm. Any Mauritian card enabled for internet payments abroad will work.

Questions from families in Mauritius
- The report mentions Indian streams. How do they relate to SC subjects?
- Science with Mathematics and Science with Biology correspond to the science side, Commerce to the economics side, and Arts to the arts and languages side. The ranking tells you which side fits before you fix individual subjects.
- Is it in English or French?
- English only. A student who studies for Cambridge exams will read it without difficulty.
- Can a Grade 9 student take it during the NCE year?
- Yes, and that is the best time. It takes under an hour and can be split across two or three sittings around revision.
For schools. State and private secondary schools in Mauritius can register free, read five complete reports, and then give one link to Grade 9 before subject choice.
