Entrance exam

TG EAPCET: who can sit it, the paper, and where it leads

TG EAPCET is the Telangana Engineering, Agriculture and Pharmacy Common Entrance Test. It was called TS EAMCET until recently, and both older names are still widely used. Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad conducts it on behalf of the Telangana Council of Higher Education. It is the prerequisite for admission to professional courses in the university and private colleges of Telangana, including the engineering colleges in and around Hyderabad. It is a separate examination from Andhra Pradesh’s, with its own notification, paper and counselling.

Important note: Please verify all examination details, including eligibility, dates, fees and application procedures, on the official website of the examination authority before taking any action.

Who can sit TG EAPCET

For the engineering stream you need the Intermediate examination, or Class 12, with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, with the minimum marks the notification sets, lower for reserved categories. Candidates must also meet a minimum age at admission. Seats are divided between local and non-local candidates, and local status depends on where you studied in the years before the qualifying examination. The rules on non-local seats have been revised since the two states separated, so a student from Andhra Pradesh or elsewhere should read the current notification and not rely on what applied to an older sibling.

How the paper is set

Candidates take the test on computer, in a single three-hour sitting. The engineering paper has 160 questions: 80 in Mathematics, 40 in Physics and 40 in Chemistry, each carrying one mark. There is no negative marking. The test is held over several sessions, and the council publishes the method it uses to normalise scores across them. The notification for each year states whether the rank rests on the entrance score alone or also gives weight to Intermediate marks.

Before you decide to sit it

As in Andhra Pradesh, Mathematics is half the paper and a wrong answer costs nothing, so attempt every question and put the most practice into Mathematics. The more important decision is made at counselling. Telangana has a large number of engineering colleges and they differ widely, so a seat in computer science at a weak college is a different thing from the same branch at a strong one. Look at where a college’s graduates are placed before ranking it. And decide which kind of engineering work you want, using the careers below, before the option form opens.

Worth sitting this exam at all?

This page tells you where TG EAPCET leads. It cannot tell you whether any of those destinations suit you — that depends on what you enjoy, how you reason and what you want from work. The assessment scores you against every career listed above and shows the arithmetic behind each match.

Worth 45 minutes even if you have already decided. Being certain is not the same as having checked, and it is free to take.
