How to become a Automobile Engineer
Also known as Automotive Engineer, Vehicle Development Engineer. Everything below comes from the same database our assessment scores against.
The route in
1. Undergraduate
4 years- Qualifications:
- B.Tech Automobile Engineering, B.Tech Mechanical Engineering
- Entrance exams:
- JEE Main, State CET
- Typical cost:
- ₹2 lakh to ₹15 lakh
Subjects you must have taken
Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics. Without these the direct route is closed, though a bridging or open-school route often reopens it.
What does a Automobile Engineer earn in India?
Entry level
₹3 lakh – ₹6.5 lakh
per year
Mid career
₹9 lakh – ₹22 lakh
per year
Indicative. These bands are an editorial estimate assembled from public reporting, and have not yet been reconciled against a named dataset. Treat them as a shape, not a promise — the same title pays very differently across a service company, a product company and a start-up.
Outlook
Hiring demand
Growing — hiring faster than average.
Exposure to automation
Medium. Parts of this role are already being automated, and the work is shifting toward the pieces that are not. Expect the job to change rather than disappear.
What does a Automobile Engineer do?
What this actually looks like
A day as a Automobile Engineer
Written about this role. The references behind it cover engineering & technology as a field rather than automobile engineer specifically.
What you would actually be doing
- Designing or refining a component that has to be made a million times over
- Taking a vehicle or a rig to the test track and instrumenting what it does
- Chasing a rattle, a vibration or a smell back to its source
- Working out how to remove cost from a part without losing what it does
- Sitting with suppliers over a tolerance that is difficult to hold in production
Who you work with
- Manufacturing engineers on the line where your part gets fitted
- Suppliers who make most of what a vehicle is built from
- Testing and homologation teams who decide whether it can be sold
- Purchasing, who will ask why the cheaper part will not do
What you work with
- CAD and simulation packages for structure, crash and thermal behaviour
- Data acquisition on test vehicles and dynamometers
- Statistical tools for quality and warranty analysis
- Regulatory standards for emissions, safety and homologation
Where and when: Design offices, test tracks and plant floors, concentrated around Chennai, Pune and the Delhi belt. The rhythm follows vehicle programmes, so intensity rises hard as a launch approaches and settles afterwards.
Working conditions
- Typical hours
- 9 to 10 hours
- Remote possible
- No — this is on-site work
- Travel
- medium travel
- Physical demand
- medium physical demand
Reality check
Before you choose automobile engineer
A report that only lists what is appealing about a career is an advertisement. This is the other half. Written about this role. The references behind it cover engineering & technology as a field rather than automobile engineer specifically.
What people like about it
- What you work on ends up on the road in numbers, where anyone can see it
- Volume manufacturing is a genuine intellectual discipline, not just repetition
- The industry is being rebuilt around electrification, so the work is changing
- India is a serious global manufacturing base, so the roles are here rather than abroad
What is genuinely hard
- Cost pressure is unrelenting, and every rupee per part is argued over
- Plant and test postings are often away from the major cities
- Electrification is removing the engine and transmission work many trained for
- Early pay lags software badly, and the comparison is unavoidable among classmates
- Who tends to enjoy this work
- Enjoy making something work reliably at scale, are content to improve an existing thing rather than start fresh, and want to see what they designed being driven.
- What the education journey is really like
- Four years of B.Tech in automobile or mechanical engineering. Mechanical is the safer choice and reaches the same jobs, because automobile companies recruit mechanical graduates in volume. The specialisation that pays now is electric powertrain, battery systems and embedded software — much of it learned on the job or through a master's, since the syllabus has not caught up.
Other legitimate ways in
The first route does not always work, and it is not always the best one. These are real alternatives, not consolation prizes.
Mechanical degree into the industry
- B.Tech Mechanical Engineering
- Campus recruitment into a vehicle or component manufacturer
- Specialisation decided by the team you land in
The route most people in this industry actually took. The mechanical degree is broader and leaves every other manufacturing sector open.
Diploma and lateral entry
- Polytechnic diploma in automobile or mechanical engineering
- Lateral entry into the second year of a degree, or straight to work
- Design, testing or plant engineering
Two years earlier into a workshop, and the practical grounding shows. The degree stays available later, which is what keeps the ceiling open.
Into electric powertrain
- Any core engineering degree
- Electrical, electronics or battery-systems depth, taken deliberately
- Electric vehicle development
Where the hiring is moving. An engineer who understands both the mechanical vehicle and the electrical powertrain is currently scarce and paid accordingly.
Who may not enjoy being a Automobile Engineer?
Nothing here is a judgement about you — it is what the job is like, listed so you can decide whether it is what you want.
- The hours look like this: 9 to 10 hours.
- It cannot be done remotely. The work needs you physically there.
- Entry pay starts low — from about ₹3 lakh a year — and rises with what you can show rather than on the day you qualify.
The four hardest things about the work itself are listed above, under what is genuinely hard. If those and the points here describe things you would rather not sign up for, that is a real answer and worth having before a stream or a degree is chosen around it.
What skills does a Automobile Engineer need?
What the job actually asks for, split four ways. The assessment tells you which of these your own scores already speak to.
Technical skills
- Vehicle dynamics, powertrain and structural behaviour
- Designing for manufacture at high volume
- Reading test data and separating a real effect from noise
- Tolerance analysis, and working out how a part can break
People skills
- Negotiating a specification with a supplier who wants it looser
- Explaining a technical constraint to somebody who owns the budget
- Working to a launch date that will not move
- Taking a warranty complaint seriously rather than personally
Digital and AI skills
- CAD and simulation for crash, thermal and structural work
- Test data acquisition and analysis
- Statistical quality tools
- Enough embedded and battery-systems knowledge to stay current
Industry knowledge
- Emissions and safety regulation, and how fast it is tightening
- The supplier tiers, and who actually holds the technology
- What electrification is doing to the parts you work on

Are you sure Automobile Engineer is the career you want?
Everything above describes the job. None of it tells you whether it fits you. So it is worth asking plainly, before a stream or a degree gets chosen around it.

- Not sure? Then this is exactly the question the assessment exists to answer. It compares you against Automobile Engineer and 196 other careers, and shows the arithmetic behind every score, so you can see why rather than being handed a verdict.
- Quite sure? Then double-check anyway. Being certain is not the same as having checked, and the cost of finding out late is counted in years rather than in the 45 minutes this takes. If it confirms what you already think, you carry on with a reason instead of a hope — plus the education route, the entrance exams and a ninety-day plan.
And if it does not line up, nothing closes. Automobile Engineer stays on your list with the gap named and a route attached, next to the careers your profile already reaches — so the answer is something to act on either way.
