Entrance exam

GUJCET: who can sit it, the paper, and where it leads

GUJCET is the Gujarat Common Entrance Test, conducted by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board, the same board that runs the state’s Class 12 examination. It is used for admission to degree engineering and degree and diploma pharmacy courses in Gujarat. The board only conducts the test. Admission is handled by a separate body, the Admission Committee for Professional Courses, which draws up the merit list and runs the counselling. A candidate therefore deals with two offices: the board for the test, and the committee for the seat.

Important note: Please verify all examination details, including eligibility, dates, fees and application procedures, on the official website of the examination authority before taking any action.

Who can sit GUJCET

You need Class 12 in the Science stream with Physics and Chemistry, and Mathematics for engineering. Students of the state board and of other boards can both sit the test. Most seats are for candidates who have passed Class 12 from schools in Gujarat, and the admission committee sets out who qualifies and what share is open to others. The committee also sets the minimum marks required in the qualifying examination. Read its admission rules as well as the board’s booklet, since the booklet covers only the test.

How the paper is set

GUJCET is taken on paper with a machine-read answer sheet. Physics and Chemistry are set together as one paper of 80 questions, 40 in each, to be answered in 120 minutes. Mathematics is a separate paper of 40 questions in 60 minutes, and candidates for pharmacy sit Biology in its place. Each question carries one mark, and a quarter of a mark is deducted for a wrong answer. The paper is offered in Gujarati, English and Hindi. The engineering merit list combines the board result with the GUJCET result in a ratio the committee announces.

Before you decide to sit it

Because the Class 12 result is part of the merit, this is another state where the board examination and the entrance test have to be prepared together. The paper follows the Class 11 and 12 syllabus closely. The penalty for wrong answers means guessing has a cost. A student aiming at the state’s colleges should sit GUJCET even if JEE Main is the main effort, since the state’s merit list is built on it.
