Entrance exam

COMEDK UGET: who can sit it, the paper, and where it leads

COMEDK UGET is the entrance test of the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka. Since NEET became the only test for medical and dental seats, the consortium has held this test for engineering alone. It fills seats at the member colleges of the Karnataka private engineering colleges’ association, which number around 150, and the consortium runs the online counselling that follows. It is not a government examination. It covers the share of private-college seats that the colleges fill themselves, alongside the share the state fills through KCET.

Important note: Please verify all examination details, including eligibility, dates, fees and application procedures, on the official website of the examination authority before taking any action.

Who can sit COMEDK UGET

The test is held online at centres all over India and is open to Indian citizens from any state. The qualifying examination is the second-year pre-university course or Class 12, with the subjects and marks that the national and university norms require. All subjects must have been passed from a single board. The consortium does not accept mark sheets from two different boards, so a candidate who took one subject through open schooling and the rest elsewhere is not eligible. This catches some candidates out at the document stage.

How the paper is set

It is a three-hour test taken on computer. It has 180 multiple-choice questions, 60 each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with one mark for a correct answer and no negative marking. The questions follow the Class 11 and 12 syllabus. The result is a rank, and seats are allotted on that rank in rounds of online counselling.

Before you decide to sit it

For a student from outside Karnataka, this is the practical way into the well-known private engineering colleges of Bengaluru, since KCET is closed to most non-Karnataka candidates. For a Karnataka student it is a second chance alongside KCET. The cost is the thing to weigh. Fees for seats filled through COMEDK are higher than for the government-quota seats at the same colleges, and the difference over four years is large. Compare the fee for the seat you are likely to get with what a state college at home would cost, and with what the branch is likely to lead to.
