Entrance exam

AP EAPCET: who can sit it, the paper, and where it leads

AP EAPCET is the Andhra Pradesh Engineering, Agriculture and Pharmacy Common Entrance Test. It was known for many years as EAMCET, and the older name is still in common use. Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Kakinada conducts it on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education. It is held in two streams. The engineering stream is for B.Tech and related degrees, and the agriculture and pharmacy stream is for those courses. It is a separate examination from the one Telangana holds under a similar name.

Important note: Please verify all examination details, including eligibility, dates, fees and application procedures, on the official website of the examination authority before taking any action.

Who can sit AP EAPCET

For the engineering stream you need the Intermediate examination, or Class 12, with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, or a recognised diploma. Seats in Andhra Pradesh are divided between local and non-local candidates under the state’s rules, and local status depends on where you studied in the years before the qualifying examination. Most seats go to local candidates. Students who studied in Telangana, and students from other states, should read the local-area rules before applying, since they decide which seats are open to them.

How the paper is set

The test is computer-based and lasts three hours. The engineering paper has 160 questions: 80 in Mathematics, 40 in Physics and 40 in Chemistry. All questions carry equal weight, and there is no negative marking. Because the test is held over several sessions, scores are normalised before ranks are drawn up. Whether Intermediate marks are given any weight in the rank has changed from year to year, so check the rule for the year you sit.

Before you decide to sit it

Half the paper is Mathematics and nothing is lost by a wrong answer, so the plan is simple: answer everything, and give Mathematics the most practice. The questions follow the Intermediate syllabus of the state board closely, and students from other boards should check it for topics they have not covered. A good rank here is the main way into the state’s engineering colleges for a local student, and it is worth sitting alongside JEE Main. Before counselling, decide which branch you want. In a state with this many engineering seats, the branch and the college matter more than simply securing a place.
