Reality check
Before you choose school teacher
A report that only lists what is appealing about a career is an advertisement. This is the other half.
What people like about it
- You watch specific children change over a year, and you were the reason
- Predictable hours and holidays, unusually good ones
- Real security in government and aided schools
- The subject stays with you — you keep teaching what you love
What is genuinely hard
- Pay is lower than for comparable qualifications elsewhere and rises slowly
- Class sizes and administrative reporting eat the time meant for teaching
- You are held responsible for outcomes shaped mostly by things outside the classroom
- Private-school employment can be insecure and contract-based
- Who tends to enjoy this work
- Get more from another person's progress than from their own visible achievement, have patience that survives the fourth explanation, and genuinely like the age group they teach.
- What the education journey is really like
- A subject degree, then a B.Ed., then a teaching eligibility test — CTET for central schools or the relevant state TET. An integrated four-year B.A. B.Ed. or B.Sc. B.Ed. is now available and saves a year. Check the current NCTE position for whichever route you pick, because the requirements have changed recently.

B.Ed into school teaching
- Degree in the subject, then B.Ed
- CTET or a state TET for government posts; private schools recruit directly
- Subject teacher, then coordinator or head of department

Teaching into leadership or ed-tech
- Teaching experience with strong classroom results
- Coordination, curriculum or academic leadership, or an ed-tech content role
- Principal, curriculum lead, or instructional design and content leadership
Where classroom experience is worth most, and ed-tech pays more than most schools do.
Who may not enjoy being a School Teacher?
