Before you choose school teacher
A report that only lists what is appealing about a career is an advertisement. This is the other half.
What people like about it
- You watch specific children change over a year, and you were the reason
- Predictable hours and holidays, unusually good ones
- Real security in government and aided schools
- The subject stays with you — you keep teaching what you love
What is genuinely hard
- Pay is lower than for comparable qualifications elsewhere and rises slowly
- Class sizes and administrative reporting eat the time meant for teaching
- You are held responsible for outcomes shaped mostly by things outside the classroom
- Private-school employment can be insecure and contract-based
- Who tends to enjoy this work
- Get more from another person's progress than from their own visible achievement, have patience that survives the fourth explanation, and genuinely like the age group they teach.
- What the education journey is really like
- A subject degree, then a B.Ed., then a teaching eligibility test — CTET for central schools or the relevant state TET. An integrated four-year B.A. B.Ed. or B.Sc. B.Ed. is now available and saves a year. Check the current NCTE position for whichever route you pick, because the requirements have changed recently.

- Research freedom in the better institutions is real
- Secure tenure, structured pay scales and a defined promotion ladder

What is genuinely hard
- The route is long — master's, NET or SET, then usually a PhD
- Permanent posts are scarce and much teaching is done on ad hoc contracts
- Administrative and accreditation work eats the time research needs
- Teaching loads in affiliated colleges leave little room for anything else

- Want to stay inside a subject for a working life, can explain the same material freshly for the tenth year, and will tolerate a long and uncertain entry.
- What the education journey is really like
- A master's in the subject, then UGC NET or a state eligibility test, and in practice a PhD for a permanent post. Many people teach on guest or ad hoc contracts for years before a sanctioned post appears. Publications and a completed doctorate are what move you from contract teaching to a permanent appointment.
