Physics, Chemistry, Biology. Without these the direct route is closed, though a bridging or open-school route often reopens it.

Reality check
Before you choose nurse
A report that only lists what is appealing about a career is an advertisement. This is the other half.
What people like about it
- You are the person who is actually there, and patients remember it
- The qualification travels internationally better than almost any other in this report
- Entry is far less competitive than medicine, and the course is much shorter
- Specialisation is broad — critical care, theatre, community, education
What is genuinely hard
- Shift work including nights, weekends and festivals, for most of a career
- Pay in India lags the responsibility, particularly in the private sector
- Staffing levels mean you regularly do more than the role should carry
- The emotional load is real and cumulative, and support for it is uneven
- Who tends to enjoy this work
- Want to care for people directly rather than direct their care from a distance, stay organised when several things need doing at once, and can hold composure with a family who are frightened and angry.
- What the education journey is really like
- A four-year B.Sc. Nursing after Class 12 with Biology, or a three-year GNM diploma, then registration with the state nursing council. Entry is through NEET for some programmes and state or institutional processes for others — check the current route for the institution you are aiming at.
Other legitimate ways in
The first route does not always work, and it is not always the best one. These are real alternatives, not consolation prizes.
B.Sc. Nursing into specialisation
- B.Sc. Nursing, with council registration
- Staff nurse, then a critical care, theatre or speciality unit
- M.Sc. Nursing or nurse practitioner, then clinical or nursing leadership
The route with the highest ceiling in India, and specialisation is what raises pay.
Nursing abroad
- B.Sc. or GNM with Indian experience
- Language and licensing examinations for the destination country
- Registered nurse abroad, often with a route to residency
Substantially better paid, and the licensing and language preparation is the real work.
Who may not enjoy being a Nurse?
Nothing here is a judgement about you — it is what the job is like, listed so you can decide whether it is what you want.
- The hours look like this: rotating shifts including nights.
- It cannot be done remotely. The work needs you physically there.
- It is physically demanding. This is not desk work, and the body notices over years.
- Entry pay starts low — from about ₹2 lakh a year — and rises with what you can show rather than on the day you qualify.
