What does a Genetic Counsellor do?

What this actually looks like

A day as a Genetic Counsellor

Written about this role. The references behind it cover health & medicine as a field rather than genetic counsellor specifically.

What you would actually be doing

  • Taking a detailed family history and drawing the pedigree from it
  • Working out which test, if any, would actually answer the family's question
  • Explaining what a test result does and does not mean, including when it means little
  • Supporting a couple through a reproductive decision that is entirely theirs
  • Writing to the referring clinician with the interpretation and the follow-up

Who you work with

  • Families, often at a point of real distress
  • Clinical geneticists, obstetricians, paediatricians and oncologists
  • Laboratory scientists who ran the sequencing
  • Patient support groups and families with the same inherited condition

What you work with

  • Pedigree drawing and risk calculation
  • Variant databases and interpretation guidelines
  • Counselling frameworks, and a private room
  • Consent documentation, which matters more here than almost anywhere

Where and when: Genetics departments in large hospitals, prenatal and fertility centres, cancer centres and genetic testing laboratories. Sessions are long, scheduled and confidential. The field is small in India and concentrated in metro tertiary centres.

Reality check

Before you choose genetic counsellor

A report that only lists what is appealing about a career is an advertisement. This is the other half. Written about this role. The references behind it cover health & medicine as a field rather than genetic counsellor specifically.

What people like about it

  • You give families information they have been searching for, carefully
  • The science moves quickly and the interpretation work is genuinely hard
  • Testing has become affordable, so the field is expanding fast
  • The counselling relationship is deep and often continues over years

What is genuinely hard

  • The conversations are heavy and some of them are about loss
  • Results are frequently uncertain and families want certainty
  • Very few posts exist and they are concentrated in a handful of cities
  • Formal recognition of the profession in India is still developing
Who tends to enjoy this work
Can hold a difficult conversation without steering the decision, are precise about uncertainty, and interested in both the science and the person in front of them.
What the education journey is really like
A background in life sciences, genetics or medicine, then a master's or postgraduate programme in genetic counselling — the Indian programmes are few and competitive, and some counsellors train abroad. Board certification through the Board of Genetic Counseling in India is the emerging credential. Supervised clinical hours are essential.

Other legitimate ways in

The first route does not always work, and it is not always the best one. These are real alternatives, not consolation prizes.

Life sciences into genetic counselling

  1. B.Sc. or M.Sc. in genetics, life sciences or a related field
  2. Postgraduate programme in genetic counselling with supervised hours
  3. Hospital genetics department, prenatal centre or testing laboratory

The direct route. Programme places are few, so plan applications well ahead.

Laboratory into counselling

  1. Molecular genetics laboratory experience with variant interpretation
  2. Genetic counselling qualification and clinical hours
  3. Clinical counselling role, or laboratory liaison and interpretation work

The laboratory background makes the interpretation half much stronger.

Who may not enjoy being a Genetic Counsellor?

Nothing here is a judgement about you — it is what the job is like, listed so you can decide whether it is what you want.

The four hardest things about the work itself are listed above, under what is genuinely hard. If those and the points here describe things you would rather not sign up for, that is a real answer and worth having before a stream or a degree is chosen around it.

What skills does a Genetic Counsellor need?

What the job actually asks for, split four ways. The assessment tells you which of these your own scores already speak to.

Technical skills

  • Family history taking and pedigree construction
  • Risk calculation and inheritance pattern interpretation
  • Variant interpretation and test selection
  • Non-directive counselling technique

People skills

  • Explaining uncertainty without either alarming or reassuring falsely
  • Supporting a decision without making it
  • Carrying conversations about loss

Digital and AI skills

  • Variant and population frequency databases
  • Pedigree and risk calculation software
  • Secure clinical record systems

Industry knowledge

  • How genetic testing is priced and what insurance covers
  • Which Indian programmes and certifications exist for this role
  • Where the posts are, and which specialities refer most

If Genetic Counsellor appeals, also look at

Chosen by how far the interest pattern and the weighted activities of each one overlap with this. The reason is printed so you can disagree with it.

  • Pharmaceutical Research Associate

    Health & Medicine

Exams worth knowing about

Where an exam has its own page, it lists every other career it opens — useful if this one turns out not to fit.

Where this qualification also leads

The degrees on this route open other doors too. Worth knowing before you commit to one destination.

Who tends to be happy here

People who rate these highly tend to stay in this work. If none of them sound like you, that is worth taking seriously.

Are you sure Genetic Counsellor is the career you want?

Everything above describes the job. None of it tells you whether it fits you. So it is worth asking plainly, before a stream or a degree gets chosen around it.

  • Not sure? Then this is exactly the question the assessment exists to answer. It compares you against Genetic Counsellor and 196 other careers, and shows the arithmetic behind every score, so you can see why rather than being handed a verdict.
  • Quite sure? Then double-check anyway. Being certain is not the same as having checked, and the cost of finding out late is counted in years rather than in the 45 minutes this takes. If it confirms what you already think, you carry on with a reason instead of a hope — plus the education route, the entrance exams and a ninety-day plan.

And if it does not line up, nothing closes. Genetic Counsellor stays on your list with the gap named and a route attached, next to the careers your profile already reaches — so the answer is something to act on either way.
