Reality check

Before you choose illustrator & comic artist

A report that only lists what is appealing about a career is an advertisement. This is the other half. Written about this role. The references behind it cover design & creative as a field rather than illustrator & comic artist specifically.

What people like about it

  • The work is recognisably yours and you can build a following on it
  • Clients come from anywhere, so a small city is not a limit
  • Editorial, publishing, advertising, games and education all commission illustration
  • Comics let you tell a whole story alone, if you want to

What is genuinely hard

  • Rates vary enormously and the low end is very low
  • Income is project-based and chasing payment is part of the job
  • Working alone for long stretches suits fewer people than expect it to
  • Generative image tools have unsettled the commercial end of the market
Who tends to enjoy this work
Draw constantly without being asked, can take an art director's revision without friction, and are disciplined enough to run their own schedule and invoicing.
What the education journey is really like
An applied art, illustration or design degree helps with fundamentals, but the portfolio is what gets commissions and self-taught illustrators are common and successful. Drawing from life, and finishing work rather than starting it, are what actually build the portfolio. A visible online body of work now functions as the introduction.

Other legitimate ways in

The first route does not always work, and it is not always the best one. These are real alternatives, not consolation prizes.

Portfolio into freelance commissions

  1. Build a focused portfolio and publish it consistently
  2. Small editorial and publishing commissions
  3. Larger clients, agents, and your own comics or books

The main route. Consistency of output builds the client list more than any qualification.

In-house art roles

  1. Applied art or design training with a strong portfolio
  2. In-house illustrator or concept artist at a studio, publisher or game company
  3. Art direction or concept lead

A salary and art direction to learn from, at the cost of drawing what the product needs.

Who may not enjoy being a Illustrator & Comic Artist?

Nothing here is a judgement about you — it is what the job is like, listed so you can decide whether it is what you want.

The four hardest things about the work itself are listed above, under what is genuinely hard. If those and the points here describe things you would rather not sign up for, that is a real answer and worth having before a stream or a degree is chosen around it.

What skills does a Illustrator & Comic Artist need?

What the job actually asks for, split four ways. The assessment tells you which of these your own scores already speak to.

Technical skills

  • Drawing fundamentals — figure, perspective, light
  • Composition and visual storytelling
  • Colour and rendering to a finished standard
  • Page layout and sequential staging

People skills

  • Working through revisions without defensiveness
  • Self-discipline across an unsupervised week
  • Quoting and holding a rate

Digital and AI skills

  • Photoshop, Procreate or Clip Studio Paint
  • Print and digital file preparation
  • Building an audience and a commission pipeline online

Industry knowledge

  • How illustration is priced — by usage, not by hours
  • Which sectors commission regularly, and which pay on time
  • What rights a client is buying, and what you retain

Exams worth knowing about

Where an exam has its own page, it lists every other career it opens — useful if this one turns out not to fit.

Where this qualification also leads

The degrees on this route open other doors too. Worth knowing before you commit to one destination.

Who tends to be happy here

People who rate these highly tend to stay in this work. If none of them sound like you, that is worth taking seriously.

Are you sure Illustrator & Comic Artist is the career you want?

Everything above describes the job. None of it tells you whether it fits you. So it is worth asking plainly, before a stream or a degree gets chosen around it.

  • Not sure? Then this is exactly the question the assessment exists to answer. It compares you against Illustrator & Comic Artist and 196 other careers, and shows the arithmetic behind every score, so you can see why rather than being handed a verdict.
  • Quite sure? Then double-check anyway. Being certain is not the same as having checked, and the cost of finding out late is counted in years rather than in the 45 minutes this takes. If it confirms what you already think, you carry on with a reason instead of a hope — plus the education route, the entrance exams and a ninety-day plan.

And if it does not line up, nothing closes. Illustrator & Comic Artist stays on your list with the gap named and a route attached, next to the careers your profile already reaches — so the answer is something to act on either way.
