Exposure to automation
Medium. Parts of this role are already being automated, and the work is shifting toward the pieces that are not. Expect the job to change rather than disappear.
What does a Film & Video Director do?
What this actually looks like
A day as a Film & Video Director
Written about this role. The references behind it cover design & creative as a field rather than film & video director specifically.
What you would actually be doing
- Working a script until the structure holds, usually with a writer
- Casting, and running readings until the performances are right
- Breaking the script into shots with the cinematographer before the shoot
- Directing on set — performance, blocking, and a hundred decisions an hour
- Sitting in the edit for months, reshaping what was shot into what works
Who you work with
- Producers, who control the money and the schedule
- Cinematographer, production designer and editor, the closest collaborators
- Actors, whose performance you are responsible for
- Studio, OTT platform or client executives giving notes
What you work with
- The script, first and last
- Shot lists, storyboards and floor plans
- Monitors, and an editing timeline for the longest stretch of the job
- A schedule that decides what is achievable each day
Where and when: Long pre-production, a compressed and exhausting shoot, then a long edit. Feature, advertising, OTT and corporate work are different businesses with different rhythms. Between projects there can be months of development that never gets made.
Working conditions
- Typical hours
- Irregular, long shoot schedules
- Remote possible
- No — this is on-site work

Reality check
Before you choose film & video director
A report that only lists what is appealing about a career is an advertisement. This is the other half. Written about this role. The references behind it cover design & creative as a field rather than film & video director specifically.
What people like about it
- You carry the whole thing, and the finished work is recognisably yours
- Collaboration is intense, and the crew relationships last careers
- OTT and streaming commissioned far more work than existed a decade ago
- Ad films and short-form work let you direct much earlier than features do
What is genuinely hard
- The route in is long — years as an assistant director on someone else's set
- Income between projects is irregular, and development can go nowhere
- You answer to producers and platforms, and the final cut is often not yours
- A shoot day is sixteen hours of decisions with money burning either way
- Who tends to enjoy this work
- Can hold a whole film in their head, direct a large crew without losing the performance, and keep going through years of work that may not get made.
- What the education journey is really like
- FTII, SRFTI, Whistling Woods or a mass-communication degree — or none of them. The usual route is assisting: second AD, first AD, then directing. Short films, ad films and music videos are how most directors show they can hold a set before anyone funds a feature. What gets you hired is work people have seen.
Other legitimate ways in
The first route does not always work, and it is not always the best one. These are real alternatives, not consolation prizes.
The assistant director ladder
- Any degree, plus a way onto a set
- Second AD, then first AD, across several projects
- Direct short-form work, then pitch your own
The most common route by far. Slow, badly paid early, and it teaches you how a set really runs.
Short-form and advertising first
- Film school or self-taught practice, with finished shorts
- Direct ad films, music videos or branded content
- Move into longer form with a body of work and a reel
Pays much earlier and proves you can deliver, which is what producers are actually assessing.
Who may not enjoy being a Film & Video Director?
Nothing here is a judgement about you — it is what the job is like, listed so you can decide whether it is what you want.
- The hours look like this: irregular, long shoot schedules.
- It cannot be done remotely. The work needs you physically there.
- Travel is a constant feature of the job rather than an occasional trip.
- It is physically demanding. This is not desk work, and the body notices over years.
- Entry pay starts low — from about ₹1.2 lakh a year — and rises with what you can show rather than on the day you qualify.
The four hardest things about the work itself are listed above, under what is genuinely hard. If those and the points here describe things you would rather not sign up for, that is a real answer and worth having before a stream or a degree is chosen around it.
What skills does a Film & Video Director need?

Are you sure Film & Video Director is the career you want?
Everything above describes the job. None of it tells you whether it fits you. So it is worth asking plainly, before a stream or a degree gets chosen around it.

- Not sure? Then this is exactly the question the assessment exists to answer. It compares you against Film & Video Director and 196 other careers, and shows the arithmetic behind every score, so you can see why rather than being handed a verdict.
- Quite sure? Then double-check anyway. Being certain is not the same as having checked, and the cost of finding out late is counted in years rather than in the 45 minutes this takes. If it confirms what you already think, you carry on with a reason instead of a hope — plus the education route, the entrance exams and a ninety-day plan.
And if it does not line up, nothing closes. Film & Video Director stays on your list with the gap named and a route attached, next to the careers your profile already reaches — so the answer is something to act on either way.
