- Turning an engineer's or architect's sketch into a dimensioned drawing
- Detailing assemblies, sections and connections nobody else has drawn yet

- What the education journey is really like
- An ITI draughtsman certificate or a diploma in civil or mechanical engineering, plus CAD software training. Employers hire on a test drawing rather than a certificate. Moving up means adding BIM — Revit or Tekla — or specialising in a detailing discipline such as structural steel or piping, both of which pay considerably more.

The first route does not always work, and it is not always the best one. These are real alternatives, not consolation prizes.
ITI or diploma straight into a design office
- ITI draughtsman certificate or engineering diploma
- CAD software training and a test-drawing portfolio
- Junior draughtsman, then detailer in one discipline
Short, cheap and employable. The specialisation afterwards is what raises the ceiling.
Draughtsman into BIM
- Drawing experience in civil, structural or MEP
- Revit or Tekla certification and live project work
- BIM modeller, then BIM coordinator
The clearest way out of the pay plateau, and BIM demand is running ahead of supply.
