What you would actually be doing
- Preparing the joint — cleaning, bevelling and fitting up before any arc is struck
- Welding in position, including overhead and vertical where gravity is against you
- Checking your own work for porosity, undercut and incomplete penetration
- Presenting welds for inspection, sometimes radiographic, on work that carries load
- Choosing process and consumables for the metal and thickness in front of you

- Certified welders travel — shipyards and the Gulf hire on skill, not on schooling

- Eyes, lungs and skin are all at risk, and the damage is cumulative

- An ITI Welder trade certificate, then apprenticeship in a fabrication shop. What actually determines your work and your rate afterwards is process certification — TIG and pressure-vessel qualifications open industries that general arc welding does not, and they have to be maintained.
