Before you choose architect
A report that only lists what is appealing about a career is an advertisement. This is the other half.
What people like about it
- You make buildings that people will use for decades
- The work combines creative and technical thinking rather than one of them
- Independent practice is realistic and common with experience
- The training itself is unusually broad and stays interesting
What is genuinely hard
- The degree is five years, and licensure adds further requirements
- Early-career pay is low relative to the length of the training
- Much of the early work is documentation rather than design
- Practice income follows the construction cycle, which is volatile
- Who tends to enjoy this work
- Can hold a spatial idea in their head and also check a dimension, take a client's revision without resentment, and enjoy the technical constraints rather than resenting them.
- What the education journey is really like
- A five-year B.Arch. after Class 12 with Mathematics, entered through NATA or JEE Paper 2, then registration with the Council of Architecture before you may use the title. Verify that any programme you consider is Council-approved — this is one where that check matters legally, not just reputationally.

- You can point at buildings, roads and bridges that exist because of your work
- Public-sector and infrastructure roles carry genuine long-term security
- Standards mean it is usually possible to know whether you are right
- Independent practice as a consultant is realistic with experience
What is genuinely hard
- Early-career pay is well below the software field for the same entrance effort
- Site postings can be remote and can move you away from family for years
- Responsibility is personal once you sign a design off
- The qualification is heavily oversupplied, so where you studied matters more than it should
- Who tends to enjoy this work
- Want to see the thing get built rather than hear about it, are careful enough to check the calculation twice, and do not mind a working day that starts on a site rather than at a desk.
- What the education journey is really like
- Four years of B.Tech or B.E. after Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, entered through JEE or a state examination. Outcomes vary enormously between institutions — research where graduates of a specific college actually go before choosing it.
